CLMA Board Chair Resignation
November 26, 2024—Clarington Library, Museums & Archives is saddened to announce Steven Cooke’s resignation as Chair of the Clarington Public Library Board.
Steven has been Chair of the Clarington Public Library Board since 2018, and was previously the Chair of the Museums & Archives Board. He successfully led the library and museum organizations through the merger that formed Clarington Library, Museums & Archives, in addition to guiding the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership CLMA has ushered in a new brand, a new strategic plan, and a new vision for our future. CEO Monika Machacek states: "Steven Cooke has been an incredible leader and advocate for the Clarington Public Library, Museum, and Archives. His dedication to the community, fostering curiosity and advocation for the CLMA have been truly inspiring”.
Steven has issued the following statement: “It has been an honour to serve as Chair of the Clarington Public Library Board since 2018. During my six years as Chair, I continuously see the positive impact our library and museum has on the lives of our community members. Stepping away is not an easy decision, but the right one for me at this time. I am confident in the strength of the team and the Board in their continued commitment to excellence. Thank you to my fellow board members, all staff and leadership, Members of Council and the community for their unwavering support of the Clarington Library, Museums and Archives.”
Mayor Adrian Foster states: "On behalf of the Municipality of Clarington, I want to thank Steven for his dedicated leadership as Chair of the Clarington Public Library Board. Steven played a pivotal role in strengthening our library’s connection to the community and fostering collaboration between the library, museum, and archives. We wish him all the best moving forward."
Tenzin Shomar, current Vice-Chair, has stepped in as the Acting Chair until the next Board meeting on Thursday, November 28, where the Board will elect new officers.
“On behalf of the Clarington Public Library Board and the CLMA as a whole, I would like to wish Steven all the very best,” states Tenzin. “It was a pleasure working with him on the Board; his support and guidance were an excellent example and template of public library board leadership.”
With Steven Cooke’s departure, there is one vacancy on the Library Board. The Clarington Public Library Board is appointed by Municipal Council and serve on a term concurrent with the term of Council. Interested candidates can find more information at: www.clarington.net/town-hall.
