Clarington Public Library Board Statement on the Waverley Place
January 22, 2025— The Clarington Public Library Board is pleased to share exciting news on the Waverley Place Museum, formerly known as the Bowmanville Museum, at 37 Silver Street.
The Waverley Place recently underwent significant maintenance and remediation work. In 2024, this included a new accessible ramp and walkway on the grounds, structural stabilization, replacement of woodwork and chimney masonry. The replacement of the columns, upper balcony railings, eavestroughs, and downspouts will be completed this year.
Previous work completed on the Waverley Place since the Library Board assumed the operations of the Clarington Museums & Archives on January 1, 2020, includes mould remediation, replacing the log cabin roof, repainting the potting shed, railing replacement, and re-plastering.
“This is an amazing part of Clarington's history and we're working hard to preserve it. Thanks to all Clarington Library, Museums & Archives staff for their dedication and professionalism," said Lloyd Rang, Ward 2 Councillor and Clarington Public Library Board member. "We are really pleased with the progress so far. I know I’m not the only one looking forward to seeing everything finished at Waverley Place.”
“We know how important local heritage, and this site in particular, is to our community,” states Tenzin Shomar, Library Board Chair.
Ron Hooper, retired Ward 2 Councillor, current Library Board Member and Chair of the Bowmanville BIA continues: “The Waverley Place is a rich and valued part of our community history – and a short walk to Historic Downtown Bowmanville. The Board was delighted to re-open it for programming and tours in the summer of 2023. We’re excited to see the restoration work that has been completed so far and to offer tours and programming at both the Waverley Place and the Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre.”
Free guided tours of the Waverley Palace are currently offered each Thursday afternoon and evening. Upcoming programs and special events include Heritage in Bloom, a unique event that pairs historical artifacts with displays by local florists, Galentine’s Evening, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and the ever-popular Murder Mystery nights. The Waverley Place is also available to book for special events, weddings, and photography. More information on programming and the Waverley Place can be found at cplma.ca.
